How do I become a Pilates Instructor?

For the next couple weeks I am going to answer some questions about being a Pilates Instructor.

There are lots of options when it comes to Pilates Certifications, make sure you do the research and find out what is appropriate for what you are looking for.  Here are a few things to consider when choosing an education path:  First, find out what the prerequisites are.  Do you need a background in fitness?  A college course in Anatomy?  A certain amount of hours  doing Pilates?  A recommendation from your teacher?  Next, think about what type of Pilates Certification you want.  Do you want a certification in Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair and Barrels or a Comprehensive Cert?  If you have a specific studio in mind that you want to work at and it only offers Reformer Pilates then you might not need a Comprehensive Cert right away but that can be an option down the road.  Next, think about how far you are willing to travel and how quickly you want to be certified.  Expect to have lots of practice hours, teaching and observing classes before you can test out.  A realistic expectation for timing is 6 months to 1 year if you are dedicated to keeping up with the hours and practicing regularly.  The Pilates Studio offers a Reformer only (for now) Certification.  We offer it once every year.  If you are interested in learning more please reach out and I will happily answer any questions.
